CHAPTER SEVEN

After the interview Warren Grant drove her back to the Temple. By this time he'd already been called into the office and the details of his proposed assignment explained to him. The long-haired young man with the thick moustache didn't seem unhappy about the project. And on the way back, he talked a lot to her about it.

When they reached the grounds of the Temple he sat behind the wheel for a moment before letting her out. "If Dare agrees to what Mr. Tate proposes, I should be able to come here tomorrow or the next day at the latest."

"Knowing you were here would make me feel a lot safer," she said.

"That's the idea," he agreed. "And there should be plenty of opportunities for us to talk."

"Not inside," she warned him. "It seems most of the house is wired to a central intercom."

"Outside then," he said. "There have to be ways."

"I'm sure we'll manage."

He looked serious. "In the meantime I'll do some research on your father and the founding of this outfit. I don't want to come in here without any background of the case.

"There ought to be plenty of newspaper material about him. The Great Lemand," she reminded him.

"I'm not apt to forget the name," he said ruefully. "The main thing will be whether Mr. Tate can scare your friend Armand Dare into allowing me to begin a study of the books."

"He probably has them fixed up crookedly enough so he'll let you come," she guessed. "You'll have to work through the fakery after you get here."

"I've some experience in that," he said grimly. "I've some basic accounting to fall back on. I'm much more worried about you than I am about the books."

"Thank you."

"It's a fact."

"I think I can manage," she said. "At least for a while."

He sighed. "Take it easy. You don't have to find all the answers out in a day. Wait until I come and let me do some of the dirty work."

"Very well," she smiled.

He got out and opened the car door for her. In a low voice he asked, "Do you honestly think they might have Melvin Harris a prisoner in there?"

"I do."

He shook his head. "It's pretty farfetched. But we'll see."

She stood and waved to him as he drove off. Then she walked slowly to the entrance of the Temple. The moment she stepped inside she was confronted by the black-robed Gwen.

"Where have you been?" the older woman asked curtly.

Paige braced herself to meet her stepmother's challenge. She said, "I decided I had some more questions to ask my lawyer so I called him and he arranged an appointment for me."

"Who drove you there and back?"

She said, "I don't really consider that important. But if you must know he sent a car from his office for me.

Gwen looked a little less assured. "I'm only concerned for your safety. You could have had one of the Temple cars.”

"I didn't want to bother you after all the upset about Thomas Blaine being killed," she said.
